Why Hawaiian Themes Run Through My Work:
I was raised in Hawai‘i — by the land, the rhythm, the values, the soul of Hawai‘i raised me. Still, not everything was celebrated back then. My grandmother forbade us from speaking pidgin. She said if we didn’t speak proper English, people would look down on us — think we were uneducated. I didn’t understand it at the time, but I do now. My father and his siblings — all Kamehameha graduates — spoke fluent English. They dressed well. Carried themselves with pride. But behind the polish was a wound: they had been shamed for being Hawaiian. Shamed into hiding what made them whole. Today, Hawaiians are rising again. Our culture is everywhere — in the language, the music, the sovereignty movement. But I still remember the silence. That’s why I don’t just use Hawaiian themes in my work. I carry them. With reverence. With mana. With pride — not just for what’s visible now… but for what had to survive in silence.
RAY JOHNSTON
FOUNDER AND OWNER OF
PHOENIX OF MANA
At 16, I was diagnosed with bone cancer — the first of many near-death battles I would survive. Years later, I went into cardiac arrest at home — no breath, no pulse for 17 minutes. But I came back. And I came back different. Since then, I’ve survived a coma, another cardiac arrest, and four strokes — and walked away from all of them with something most people never find: my will. I didn’t just heal — I resurrected. That journey became the living blueprint behind Phoenix of Mana — a platform built not on theory, but on raw truth, embodied transformation, and the will to live when life tells you you shouldn’t. With over 20 years of professional experience guiding others through the depths of trauma, I’ve become one of the most battle-tested mentors alive. My coaching isn’t motivational — it’s initiatory. This isn’t just what I teach. It’s what I lived.
The logo for Phoenix of Mana isn’t just art — it’s my story. The erupting volcano represents the fire I’ve walked through: Organ failure. Four strokes. Seventeen minutes without a pulse. The kind of pain that burns everything you thought you were. But from that fire… I rose. The phoenix is me — forged in flames I didn’t choose, but reborn with a truth I couldn’t ignore. This isn’t just a logo. It’s a remembrance: That even when everything dies…something greater can rise. That is the meaning of Phoenix of Mana. A rise not of ego — but of essence. Of soul. Of mana.
